I was surprised at how easy it was to create this screencast. Screencast-o-matic is a simple and intuitive tool to use. I liked that I was able to automatically adjust the volume to best suit my normal speaking volume. I also like the ease with which I was able to move the tool around my screen and resize it so that it only showed what I wanted to show rather than being stuck showing the entire screen. The instantaneous playback and options to discard the recording or save are also convenient.
It only took me three takes to create this screencast. I didn’t really think about what I was going to say beforehand, which I think makes the recording seem more organic and realistic than it would have been if I had read off a script. That being said, if I were to do this again I would like to work on reading from an outline in a way that doesn’t sound too awkward or forced. I also do not like to listen to the sound of my own voice, which may be part of the reason it only took me three takes because after a bit I didn’t want to hear my voice again. That is another thing I would like to work on because sound editing is almost impossible if you aren’t comfortable with with sound of your own voice.
Realistically, I could not think of many ways that I would use this form of presentation in the future. I could maybe see myself using it to present a video game in the form of a walkthrough, but if it were my own product I would want it to be done more professionally. However, I know that video game streaming has become immensely popular over the past couple of years and it’s a great way to gain some visibility for indie gaming studios. Although I didn’t particularly enjoy the process, I could see myself becoming more comfortable with it over time.
Hello Pocket Player,
I too feel weird when I listen back to something that has my voice in it. I tend to judge myself way more than I would listening to a complete stranger. I think about all the times I say “um” or ways I could of said my thoughts differently. Knowing what you want to talk about helps to guide your thought process as you speak it aloud, so I definitely agree with making an outline. Companies use this type of software for instructional trainings and tutorials all the time. We actually use it ourselves as well if we want to learn a new skill or need help with something, for example the image editing task or if you wanted to learn videography without paying for a course.
